Global Climate change alter regional climates and its extremes in many countries around the globe. The impacts of climate change on a wide range of economic sectors were estimated to inhibit the achievements of country’s development plan. Regardless to mitigation and adaptation efforts, various countries are facing or even experiencing risks of losses and damages (L/D) from climate change. Therefore, it is urgently required to adopt climate risk management by recognizing the relevance of mitigation, adaptation, and disaster risk reduction as well as the potentials of combined approaches. ‘Losses and damages’ refer to impacts of climate change (include slow onset events and extreme weather events) that have not been, or cannot be, avoided through mitigation and adaptation efforts (UNFCCC, 2020)
To address the climate change impact, the NDC roadmap proposed eight strategies to implement the NDC commitment. One of the strategies is to enhance the country's capacity in Climate Literacy. For the L/D context, the literacy can be supported by the development of learning tools and materials on loss and damage that can be accessed by as many as interested participants.
The losses and damages due to climate change that are already occurring will further have significant impacts in the future, and the younger generation will face the impacts. Hence, education on climate change subjects is an essential step to increase climate literacy. Public and/or community, especially the young generation, should be equipped with necessary knowledge and skill on how to adapt with the new climate regime.
Considering the commitment of the Government of Indonesia and the importance of accelerating climate literacy for the younger generation in Indonesia, the global program of Risk Assessment and Management for Adaptation to Climate Change (Loss and Damage) of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) and the Center for Disaster Studies, IPB University initiated a joint cooperation to develop learning materials for climate-related loss and damage and climate risk management.
The overall objective of the cooperation is to advance and mainstream learning materials and information products on L/D as part of climate risk management.
Cooperation Periods
The works were completed in two periods. The first period (October– November 2020) was devoted to develop tools and materials. As a continuation, the second period (April– July 2021) focused on dissemination. Technical discussion on the topic of climate risk management was carried out together with the Global Programme on Risk Assessment and Management for Adaptation to Climate Change.
Beneficiary groups
The main target groups of the produced material include: (a) Students, (b) Trainers or practitioners from local communities or experts, and (c) Government representatives related to climate change management and disaster risk management. Moreover, the target group is not limited to beneficiaries in Indonesia, but is also designed to be accessible within the ASEAN region
